Lukla Airport is a small domestic airport located in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. It is one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its short runway, steep gradient, and location at an altitude of 2,860 meters (9,383 feet) above sea level. The airport is also known as Tenzing Hillary Airport in honor of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

The airport was built in 1964 by Sir Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa people to support the growing number of climbers and trekkers visiting the Everest region. Today, Lukla Airport serves as the main gateway to the Everest region and is a popular starting point for the Everest Base Camp Trek.

The runway at Lukla Airport is only 527 meters (1,729 feet) long and has a gradient of 12 degrees, making it extremely challenging for pilots to land and take off. The airport is surrounded by mountains on all sides, and the weather conditions can be unpredictable, with frequent fog and strong winds. As a result, Lukla Airport is only open for a few hours a day, and flights are often delayed or canceled due to poor weather conditions.

Despite its reputation as a dangerous airport, Lukla Airport remains an important hub for the Everest region, providing vital access to the local communities and supporting the tourism industry in the area. Over the years, the airport has undergone several upgrades and renovations to improve safety and efficiency, including the installation of navigational aids and the extension of the runway.

Overall, Lukla Airport is a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Sherpa people and their determination to support the growing tourism industry in the Everest region.

Tenzing–Hillary Airport
Tenzing–Hillary Airport is frequently referred to as the most dangerous airport in the world. Arriving and departing aircraft must use a single runway (06 for landing and 24 for takeoff). There is a low prospect of a successful go-around on short final approach due to the terrain.
